The University of East Anglia was founded in 1963 on a 320-acre (130-hectare) campus west of the city center, with four colleges and 26 schools of study. The university’s annual income for 2020–21 was £292.1 million, with £35.2 million from research grants and contracts and £290.4 million in spending. The university’s undergraduate offer rate was 85.1 percent in 2021.

The postgraduate Master of Arts in creative writing program, founded in 1970 by Sir Malcolm Bradbury and Sir Angus Wilson, is largely regarded as the best in the UK, and admission is competitive.

At a talk at the John Innes Centre in 2005, Sir David King, the UK government’s senior scientific adviser, called the school “the strongest in the world.”
