What is Arc stud welding?
Arc stud welding is a reliable method of fastening for a wide variety of applications. It can quickly weld any size, and create strong, one-sided welds on the base metal, even as thin as 0.048 inches. It uses a DC power supply to create the arc, which produces the joint in just 0.06 seconds.

Applications of stud welding
Arc stud welding is used in a wide variety of applications. With an automatic feeder, the operation is faster, although it depends on size and process.
Arc stud welding is performed on lightweight materials such as:
- Jewelry, such as earrings and pins.
- Hardware, such as brackets, cleats, and tool handles.
- Cookware, such as utensils, pots, pans, and handles.
- Electrical housewares, such as electric frying pans, cookers, oven assemblies, and microwave guides.
- Electrical and electronic devices, such as components, terminals, pumps, motors, communication equipment, and electronic systems.
- Doors, such as commercial doors, escutcheon plates, and insulation.

The technique is used in the automotive industry to weld heat shields, power steering, and dashboard components. It is also used in instrument panels, exhaust systems, insulation, electrical wire routing, lighting system, brake lines, and trim.
Farm equipment industry, it’s used to assemble fenders, brackets, cabs, spreaders, shrouding, thresher teeth, wiring, and hose management parts. It’s also used in lawn and garden equipment, such as tractors, mowers, and seeders.
Construction equipment industry, it’s used to make cover plates, non-skid devices, and wiring and hose management parts.
Commercial appliance industry, it’s used in commercial dishwashers, bottle washers, cooking equipment, and griddle plate assemblies.
Furniture manufacturers use it for metal household and office furniture, lawn furniture, shelving, and racks.
Assemblers of fabricated metal products use arc stud welding in barbecue equipment, enclosures, plumbing apparatus, insulation enclosures, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning units, and water storage systems.
In the industrial equipment industry, arc stud welding is used to assemble inspection cover plate attachments, enclosures, flow indicators, material handling equipment, and controls. It’s also used for power transformer tanks and transducers.
Shipbuilders use it to attach insulation, wire management devices, and hatch covers.
Types of arc stud welding
It has three common techniques which include: drawn arc stud welding, short arc stud welding, and gas arc stud welding. Below are the types of arc stud welding:
Draw arc stud:
drawn arc stud techniques work with a flux, that is embedded into the stud to clean the metal surface before the joining takes place. It reacts with the contaminating elements in the atmosphere to keep the weld area clean. The flux, later on, vaporizing when it feels the arc heat.

Short arc stud welding:
As for the short arc stud techniques, it is much similar to drawn arc, their differences are that short arc techniques use no flux or ferrule. The process is achieved in a very short time, making it to be characterized by high current and short time welding times. It is suitable for many high-volume applications and can produce a porous weld. This arc stud process should be selected when speed and cost are considered over weld strength.

Gas arc stud welding:
Finally, in gas arc welding techniques, inert shielding gas without flux or ferrule is supplied to the weld area, making it easier to be automated. The shielding gas is delivered by a spark shield. The welding gun is positioned for welding, immediately the gun is triggered, the shielding gas flows into the welding area, as the stud is lifted up. The arc generated melts the stud while lifted and the base metal. When the molten pool occurs, the stud is then pressed to the base metal, as the shielding gas continues to flow into it until the molten metal cools and creates the joints.
