Benchwork tools

List of Benchwork hand tools and their uses

Summary

A workbench is a sturdy table designed for manual work and there are several benchwork hand tools used on them. They range from simple flat surfaces to very complex designs that may be considered tools in themselves. Workbenches vary in size from tiny jeweler benches to the huge benches used in woodworking and metalworking shops.

Benchwork allows very convenient operations in the engineering field with different hand tools and portable tools to be used. Benchwork offers greater work finish and a fairly good degree of accuracy. Though some work is expected to be performed on an automatic machine, the workbench still offers greater importance and is expected to be seen in every workshop.

Woodworking and metalworking workshops found great importance on the workbench as most hand operations are done on them to reach the desired accuracy. Hand operations carried out on the workbench include marking, chipping, sawing, drawing, filing, threading, and grinding.

Some benchwork hand tools used in metalworking shops are filter vices, bench vises, surface plates, v-blocks, scribing blocks, try squares, bevel gauges, files, etc. In woodworking shops, benchwork hand tools used include claw hammer, chisels, mortice chisels, mallets, hand saw, backsaws, coping saws, block planes, jack planes, etc. Learn about types of measuring tools here!

Types of hand tools used on Metalworking workbench

The followings listed below are types of hand tools used in metalworking:

Bench vice

A bench vise is suitable for holding job in position during various metalworking operations. They can be use to grip a workpiece when cutting or welding.

Surface plates

A surface plate is a flat and plane surface that is used for dimensional measurement. It is used for inspection, toolmaking, gauging, spotting, marking, and layout and they are made out of metal, cast iron, glass, granite.

V block

A v-block is used in metalworking to hold workpiece such as pipes or rod in place so that operations like milling, drilling, or bending can be performed. Other operations like cutting, and inspecting can be carried out.

Scribing Block

A scribing block is a measuring instrument used for indicating and measuring quantity of an item such as thinkness of a material or even the level of fluid.

Universal surface gauge

Surface Gauge is a vital precision tool used by machinist’s and toolmakers for scribing lines, transferring measurements and probing surfaces in inspection work.

Try square

A try square is a woodworking and metalworking tool used for marking and checking 90° angles on workpieces. A try square is considered one of the most important benchwork hand tools.

Bevel Gauge

A bevel guage which is also known as sliding T bevel or false square is an adjustable gauge used for setting and transferring angles.

Files

Files are used to remove fine amount of material from a workpiece with the effects of friction. They are used in woodworking and metalworking, and they are classified according to their length grade, cut,and shape.

Scrapers

A scraper is a single-edged tool used to scrape metal or other materials from a surface. The tool is required where a surface needs to be trued, corrected for fit to a mating part.

Hammers

Hammers are often hand tool, consisting of a weighted “head” fixed to a long handle that is swung to deliver an impact to a small area of an object. They are use to drive nails, straight and bend workpieces.

Hack-Saw

Hack-saw are used both in metalworking and woodworking field for cutting metal or wood materials.

Punch

Punch are used for various purposes such as making holes, drive fasteners like nails and dowels, or creating an indentation of the tip on a workpiece.

Calipers

Calipers are used to measure the dimensions like length, width, thickness, diameter or depth of an object or hole.

Screw Drivers

These types of hand tools are used for inserting and removing screws from a workpiece, especially wood. Screw drivers are of different variation to match with the right screw drive.

Drills

A drill is a power tool that uses a rotating drill bit to create holes in various materials, such as wood, metal, and plastic. They are commonly used in construction and carpentry work, as well as in plumbing and electrical work.

Taps and Dies

A tap is a threaded tool that forms threads in the female portion of a mating pair. Taps and dies are cutting tools used to create threads on workpiece such as screws, bolts, nuts and to create a threaded hole to screw components into. Learn about sheet metal work tools here!

Types of Woodworking Benchwork Hand tools

The following listed below are benchwork hand tools:

Claw Hammer

Claw hammer are primarily used in carpentry for driving and pulling nails from wood.

Chisels

A chisel is a hand tool with a shaped cutting edge on the end of its blade. It’s used for cutting or carving materials like wood, metal, or stone with the helpd of mallet, hand, or mechanical power.

Mortice Chisels

A mortice chisel is a strong chisesl with a thick blade used for cutting mortise holes of a mortise and tenon joint.

Mallet

Mallets are tools used for applying force on working tools or workpiece. They are often made of rubber and sometimes wood.

Hand Saw

Hand saw are hand tools that can be used for roughtly cutting wood and logs, and making intricate curved cuts in wood.

Backsaws

Backsaws are saws that has a stiffening rib oon the edge opposite the cutting edge, providing a better control and more precise cutting.

Coping Saw

Coping saw are types of blow saw used to cut intricate external shapes and interior cut-outs in carpentry. It is popularly used for cutting moldings to create coped.

Block Plane

A block plane is used in woodworking for planing end grain, bevelling edges, and finishing joints. Its body is designed to be held in many ways for work handling suitability on difficult surfaces.

Jack Plane

A jack plane is a woodworking bench tool used for dressing timber down to size before truing and edge jointing.

Saw Horse

A saw horse is used in woodworking to support a a board or plank so that operation like sawing can be performed.

Workbench

A workbench is an equipment that allow a woodworker to keep all hand tool or work tools and work at the same time. Workbenches are designed to be comfortable to work with and ease working.

Router Table

A router table are used to create jointed edges without a jointer. Most woodworker have jointers they used to create smooth, and straight edges on board, but in this case, it is eliminated.

Spirit Level

Spirit levels are hand tools designed to indicate if a surface area is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb).

Combination Square

A combination square is a measuring and marking out tool used in woodworking, metalworking, and stonemasonry. It has multiple rulers and a scriber.

Marking Knife Or Pencil

A marking knife or pencil is used to create visible line on workpiece which can be used to guide a hand saw, chisel or plane when making woodworking joint.

Marking Gauge

Marking gauges are used in woodworking and metalworking to also mark out lines for cuttin and other operations.
