BlacKkKlansman is a 2018 American biographical crime comedy-drama film directed by Spike Lee and written by Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott and Lee, loosely based on the 2014 memoir Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth. The film stars John David Washington as Stallworth, along with Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, and Topher Grace. Directed by Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman tells the true story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), the first Black detective in Colorado Springs, Colorado, who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan and begins regular conversations with KKK leader David Duke. It’s one of the movies based on real life stories and only dramatizes it slightly. His actual investigation occurred between 1978 and 1979, though the film is set in 1972.

Before true crime podcasts and Dateline NBC marathons, there was Truman Capote, whose account of the 1959 massacre of a family in rural Kansas shocked a nation not yet desensitized to random acts of unspeakable violence. The film was shot on location at sites where Smith and Hickock’s crimes occurred, including the real Clutter home where they robbed and murdered all four members of the family. Conrad Hall’s black-and-white cinematography washes out any trace of cinematic artifice, and Robert Blake and Scott Wilson’s performances were great. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The King tells the story of Henry, Prince of Wales, who is crowned King Henry V after his father and brother both die. While King Henry spent most of his days drinking and fooling around he is determined to be nothing like his father. The film focuses on the rise of Henry V as king after his father dies as he also must navigate palace politics, the war his father left behind, and the emotional strings of his past life. The King premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on 2 September 2019.

Ben Affleck’s film Argo tells the tale of a CIA rescue of six Americans stuck in Tehran after they escaped the US embassy following a militant takeover. The screenplay was written by Chris Terrio and was adapted from the 1999 memoir The Master of Disguise by U.S. C.I.A. The film deals with the “Canadian Caper”, in which Mendez led the rescue of six U.S. diplomats from Tehran, Iran, under the guise of filming a science-fiction film during the 1979 –1981 Iran hostage crisis.

Unexpectedly ascending the throne after his brother abdicates, the King is forced to find a solution for his lifelong stutter with the help of an unconventional speech therapist. The King’s Speech was a major box office and critical success. It was widely praised by film critics for its visual style, art direction, screenplay, directing, score, and acting. Other commentators discussed the film’s representation of historical detail, especially the reversal of Winston Churchill’s opposition to abdication. The film also received a lot of awards and nominations.
