Review of Dell XPS 15 (2023)

For years, my favorite 15-inch laptop has been the Dell XPS 15. Its thin-bezel display highlights its constant mix of strength and stylish appearance. However, this laptop’s primary design hasn’t altered in a while. In the meanwhile, the Apple Silicon MacBook Pros were released, and then the XPS 13 (9315) had a complete overhaul. The XPS 15 is now in a difficult position as a result of everything, and it essentially stays the same in 2023.

Even while many of my favorite XPS 15 features are still present, the small CPU and GPU enhancements this year don’t seem to be sufficient to keep up with the competition. Simply put, the XPS 15 (9530) isn’t as distinctive as it once was.

The old Dell XPS 15 2022, which was similarly essentially identical to the model before it, is similar to the new Dell XPS 15 OLED ($1,299 to start; OLED model starts at $2,199). We’re getting the identical laptop we’ve seen before with upgraded internals. That’s not always a bad thing, though, since the most recent model of the XPS 15 OLED continues to be among the greatest laptops and best Windows laptops available.

Review of Dell XPS 15

The major change is that the XPS 15 OLED from 2023 is equipped with the newest 13th Gen Intel Core CPUs and laptop GPUs from Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 40-series. You may also order one with an Intel Arc graphics card installed. Aside from that, you get all the same features as before, including a stunning 3.5K OLED display (if you choose to upgrade), a respectable number of ports, and sufficient power for general computing and gaming.

Well, in this article, I’ll be making the Review of the Dell XPS 15 (2023) on its performance, price, design, and Battery Life.

Performance

Review of Dell XPS 15 (2023)

It can produce consistently high-performance thanks to the higher hardware you can select, thereby making it a gaming laptop in all but name. Even while its ray-tracing abilities pale in comparison to those of real gaming systems, they are nonetheless present. In terms of productivity and creative output, I discovered that it operated without any noticeable hiccups or difficulties. The ventilation system did its job efficiently and kept the laptop from overheating even when used for demanding work or pleasure.

Benchmark testing, though, paints a different picture. The XPS 15 2023 easily defeats the Samsung Galaxy Book3 Ultra and the XPS 15 2022 when comparing some scores for tests like 3D Mark’s Time Spy and Fire Strike. However, on other tests, such as Night Raid, Cinebench R23, and GeekBench 5, the results are either identical or much worse. You’re receiving a current-generation card that is comparable to the 4050 of the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra and even the 3050 Ti of the 2022 XPS 15, despite the fact that this is a 4070 GPU.

Design

Review of Dell XPS 15 (2023)

The new Dell XPS 15 has the exact same appearance as its forerunners. It boasts a smooth machined aluminum chassis and a generally slender profile, making it a stylish and elegant laptop. It will not look out of place at your house, business, or preferred café. The XPS 15 is lightweight and portable, measuring 13.57 x 9.06 x 0.71 inches, and weighs up to 4.23 pounds. It is also cozy to grasp because of its strong construction and relative thinness.

The laptop is plain but for the Dell branding on its silver lid. The silver chassis contrasts nicely with the all-black interior. The keyboard is flanked by front-facing speakers, and the large screen is made possible by minimal bezels.

Although I enjoy the XPS 15’s look, my primary issue with the XPS series has always been that the lid of the laptop lacks a lip, making it difficult to open. Fortunately, the lid is sturdy yet simple to shift when it is open. No matter how much you wiggle or shake the laptop, it doesn’t wobble or creak. Just make the XPS 15 easier to open, please.

The Dell XPS 15 (2023) has a light silver chassis that sparkles in the light, making it a really attractive Ultrabook to look at. It weighs little more than four pounds or slightly less than two kilograms, but because of its well-balanced design, you won’t notice it, even when carrying it around in a bag. It also has a decent weight to it and a very sturdy design that should make it durable over time.

The palm rest is made of black carbon fiber on the inside, and it has a lovely texture in addition to being functional in that it keeps hands cool and reduces sweat accumulation. I wish there was backlighting for late-night typing because the keyboard has good wide keys that perform well for folks with larger fingers or situations that necessitate such. I wish there was an audible click to go along with the excellent visceral feedback the mechanical touchpad provides with each click.

Battery Life

Review of Dell XPS 15 (2023)

The battery life of the XPS 15 OLED from 2022 was respectable. Unfortunately, the 2023 model does not fit that description. The XPS 15 lasted for 8 hours and 58 minutes on the Tom’s Guide battery test, which entails continuous web browsing at 150 nits of screen brightness. That’s a significant decrease from the XPS 15 OLED’s 10-hour, 5-minute battery life from the previous year. Additionally, it is less expensive than rivals like the MacBook Pro 16-inch 2023 (16:37) and Galaxy Book 3 Ultra (10:01).

The Dell XPS 15 (2023)’s battery life isn’t terrible per se; it’ll practically get you through an eight-hour workday when used for ordinary tasks and just over that when used as a video streaming device. But this one undoubtedly falls short of the Dell XPS 15 (2022)’s excellent battery life. The 4000-series GPUs are most likely to blame, as they appear to be battery hogs on every level. However, the fact that you have to plug it in before your workday is over is still somewhat disappointing. Fortunately, it charges rapidly; when I tested it, it took less than an hour to fully charge.
