Review of HP Envy 16 (2023)

The goal of HP’s Envy line has always been to deliver premium-level performance without making any concessions at prices that are closer to the middle. The most potent of the group, the bigger Envy 16 offers the best performance for video editing and gaming thanks to its quick CPUs and GPUs. That makes it a desirable substitute for a MacBook Pro in many ways.

The Envy 16 was only internally modified for 2023. It now has Nvidia RTX 4000-series GPUs and Intel 13th-gen CPUs, which together make for a legitimate upgrade for producers and gamers seeking some additional performance at a reasonable price.

The HP Envy 16 is a fantastic high-end laptop that virtually had me infatuated right away. More time spent with the Envy 16 just confirmed my initial belief that it might be one of the best all-purpose laptops. The Envy 16 is there for you whether you need it for work, personal use, or recreational gaming.

The sleek aluminum frame and powerful internal components give this laptop a premium look and feel. A 12th generation Intel Core i9 processor, an amazing 32GB of RAM, 2TB of storage, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM that can easily run new games are all included. Naturally, powerful specifications are useless without a magnificent display, but fortunately for you, the HP Envy 16 checks that box, too, with its gorgeous 16-inch, 4K OLED display.

Review of HP Envy 16 (2023)

Is the Envy 16 one of the greatest laptops for gamers? Maybe not, especially in comparison to laptops made specifically for gaming, such as the Envy 16’s rival, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17. However, when pitted against some of the greatest high-end laptops for video makers, such as Dell’s Precision 5470, the Envy 16 could easily make you believe it was designed exclusively for gaming.

Well, I’ll be making the Review of the HP Envy 16 (2023) on the performance, price, Design, and  Battery life.

Review of HP Envy 16 (2023)

Recall that the HP Envy 16 has a 2TB TLC M.2 SSD, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, plus 6GB of dedicated VRAM, and a 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900H CPU.  It should come as no surprise that the Envy 16 handled every task I gave it as it has a staggering 32GB of RAM. I launched Google Chrome, accessed Netflix and YouTube, played a video on each, and opened roughly 30 other tabs from various websites. I was still able to type in a Google Doc without any lag or delay because the fans were hardly loud and the laptop wasn’t even warm.

With a score of 11,621, the Envy 16 performed extremely well on the Geekbench 5.4 all-around performance benchmark, but not as good as the Strix Scar 17 (13,209). The score of the Dell Precision 5470 was quite comparable to that of the HP Envy 16 (11,040), whereas that of the typical premium laptop was just about half as high (5,895).

With six performance cores and eight efficiency cores that can each handle 20 threads and a top speed of 4.7GHz, the Intel Core i7-12700H boasts outstanding productivity attributes.

The Envy also uses 16GB of dual-channel DDR5 memory in addition to the 6GB of dedicated memory, 3840 stream processors, and robust 95W TDP of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics unit. With outstanding read and write speeds of 6814MB/s and 5016MB/s on its 1TB Micron 3400 SSD, PC and application launch times are quick.

One of the quickest models of the i7-12700H CPU I’ve seen is the one in the Envy. Its single- and multi-core Geekbench scores of 1779 and 12,214 are excellent. Its PCMark 10 score of 7127 is also great, and I anticipate the Envy to be slightly quicker than the XPS 15 on a regular basis.

Review of HP Envy 16 (2023)

The HP Envy 16 initially appears to be another stylish, high-end laptop with a sleek silver casing. But if you look closer, you’ll see that HP’s Envy laptops are made with environmentally friendly components like recycled aluminum and plastic that will eventually end up in the ocean. How fantastic! It feels cool to the touch and is a good weight. It is beneficial for the environment and looks lovely on a desk. It’s all positive outcomes.

“But wait, there’s more!” Billy Mays would say, as would we. With the exception of the bigger bottom bezel, which is barely perceptible, the Envy 16’s gorgeous 16-inch display has narrow side bezels. The word “Envy” is displayed in a contemporary box-style typeface, situated between two speakers and an island-style keyboard.

One long fan vent occupies almost half of the underside of the Envy 16 when it is turned over. To give the laptop some breathing area for all its hot air, two lengthy rubber strips—one at the front and the other close to the hinge—raise it. Then, there are two speaker grilles at the front corners on the left and right, respectively.

The HP Envy 16 weighs 5.1 pounds and has dimensions of 14.07 x 9.91 x 0.78 inches. The Envy 16’s competition in our review, the Dell Precision 5470, measures 12.2 x 8.3 x 0.7 inches and weighs 3.3 pounds. On the other hand, this laptop’s gaming counterpart, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17, has dimensions of 15.6 x 11.1 x 0.92 inches and a weight of 6.1 pounds.

Battery life

Review of HP Envy 16 (2023)

You can have your cake and eat it too with the HP Envy 16. By that, I mean that you can have strong hardware that works well and a pretty decent battery life. The Envy 16 lasted 9 hours and 21 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery test, which entails continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits.

The battery life of the Envy 16 is greater than a full day of work, but it is still slightly below average when compared to comparable high-end laptops. The typical premium laptop has a battery life of 10 hours, 35 minutes. The Envy 16’s competition for content creators, the Dell Precision 5470, outlasted it by a massive 11 hours and 38 minutes.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 (2022) G733Z, the Envy 16’s gaming counterpart, couldn’t even come close to competing in terms of online browsing battery life. Three hours less than the Envy 16, the Strix Scar 17 lasted six hours and twenty minutes. We did, though, test the Envy 16’s battery life while playing video games (PCMark 10). The Strix Scar 17 lived for an hour and ten minutes whereas it lasted an hour and twenty minutes. It would be wise to leave both laptops plugged in when gaming, but be prepared for more fan noise.

In battery benchmarks, the HP Envy 16 performed well despite having robust internals. Use the Envy for standard, everyday work tasks, like some content creation, and you’ll get through the entire day’s worth of work. The Envy did, in fact, endure for 8 hours and 42 minutes on a typical work test.

If you’re careful with how you use the notebook, you’ll get through the commute as well. That battery life expanded to a tremendous 14hrs 52mins in a movie playback test with the screen brightness decreased. Expect a less impressive 90 minutes of use if you want to truly test the Envy’s components or use it for gaming, which is frustrating but not unexpected. The XPS can’t come close to matching that lifespan, but the MacBook Pro will provide even higher performance. Also, keep in mind that upgrading to OLED will reduce battery life.
