What are the benefits of an internship at CRG?

Although you may already have a good idea about what makes our internship program special, here are a few of its highlights: Madrid is one of Europe’s most exciting cities to visit. Every summer, hundreds of students from around the world travel to Spain for an unforgettable experience. Most students study Spanish during their internships with us and receive 10 hours per week of intensive language instruction in addition to their rotations. This is an excellent opportunity for students who want to learn Spanish while learning more about research in Spain and Europe.

How does it feel to be part of our team?

We recruit interns from a variety of backgrounds, ranging from people who want to learn more about biotechnology, to those who are just starting out in science and want to gain some experience. But at CRG, we’re part of a big family that works together toward one goal: helping people in their lives. It feels amazing knowing you are a part of something bigger than yourself!

Why should I intern abroad?

One of the most popular questions we get at our recruiting events for summer internships in Spain is Why Spain? And, to be honest, it’s a really good question. The answer isn’t that simple, but here are three reasons why you should make your internship in Spain one of your top choices for summer 2022: Spanish culture, international exposure, and professional opportunities.

What will I be doing at my internship?

The CRG Summer Internship program in Spain is a highly selective program that brings students from around the world to work on cutting-edge research at one of our seven Spanish labs. Working with Dr. Arturo Quirós González, one of Spain’s top cancer researchers, you will be conducting cancer research alongside graduate students and Ph.D. candidates. The lab conducts basic cancer research investigating how specific proteins regulate gene expression in relation to aggressive cancers such as breast, ovarian, prostate, and lung cancer.

How much can I expect to learn during my internship?

Learning a new language and culture is one of your primary goals, but don’t expect to achieve fluency during just one summer. Work hard, ask questions, and keep an open mind about what you’re learning—and you should notice major strides in your ability to speak Spanish by the internship’s end. And with such a fun group of fellow interns, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to test out those new skills outside of class!

When can I start my internship?

We ask that you plan on arriving in Barcelona between July 3rd and 5th, 2022. Upon arrival, you will be assigned a host family that is close to your age group; it is important to note that most families are only able to host one intern at a time.

How long is the internship?

A CRG summer internship is 8 weeks long and is unpaid. Students are responsible for their own housing and travel expenses. However, if students come from outside Madrid they may be eligible for a travel stipend. Students should budget an additional €750-1000 (depending on their country of origin) to cover all of these expenses. The program is also open to students currently enrolled in a semester abroad or students living in Madrid during their school year, who will have to adjust transportation home accordingly.
