You Are the Universe – Deepak Chopra: Review and Summary

What happens if contemporary science hits a significant turning point that calls into question all of our preconceived notions about reality? In this insightful, relevant, and useful book, Chopra and Kafatos inform us that we have arrived at precisely this moment.

The phrase “You Are the Universe” literally indicates that we are all co-creators of reality that extends to the furthest reaches of space and time. This apparently unattainable claim stems from the status of science today, when several major questions remain unsolved outside of the public view while being the same problems that determine reality itself:

The authors state that “a new paradigm is emerging.” The solutions provided in this book are not our own or our irrational whims. The cosmos in which we all inhabit is participatory. The paradigm change becomes personal as you make the decision to completely engage with your mind, body, and soul.

Review

“The physicist Einstein and the sage Tagore briefly met to talk about the essence of reality over a century ago. It’s long past time to revisit their intriguing discussion of how spirituality and science inform one another, and this new book offers just that!

The writers’ remarkable discovery of Tagore’s exquisite human cosmos will leave you in awe, even if you, like me, favor Einstein’s world. – Dimitar Sasselov, Harvard University astronomy professor and author of The Life of Super-Earths: How the Search for Extraterrestrial Worlds and Artificial Cells Will Transform Life on Earth

“Who am I? is not the question posed by this popular science book. And why am I here? The most significant scientific problems pertaining to our fundamental existence are addressed in this significant new book.

Ultimately, we are compelled to believe that we inhabit a participatory cosmos that we construct and construct in accordance with the neurological system that we as a species find enjoyable.

The end product is an engrossing and utterly intriguing literary journey that will leave you speechless. —Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi, Rose F. Kennedy, and Joseph P. Vice-Chair of the Neurology Department at Harvard Medical School; Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital

“An inspiring and insightful work that points out the sterility and inadequacy of the materialist paradigm that unnecessarily pervades modern science.” —Ruth E. Kastner, Ph.D., author of Solving Quantum Riddles: Understanding Our Unseen Reality

“Deepak Chopra continues where he left off in War of the Worldviews in You Are The Universe, but this time he teams up with a scientist instead of fighting against one like myself. Together with Menas Kafatos, a specialist in quantum physics, Chopra takes us on a journey across the cosmos and humanity’s role within it, examining how science and spirituality may influence one another.

It was a fun journey, even though I don’t share that philosophy.” —Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Your Life and The Grand Design (with Stephen Hawking) by Leonard Mlodinow, PhD

“As brain science and Western philosophy remain confounded by consciousness, this book points toward a solution, a deep connection between our minds and the fundamental makeup of the universe.” —Co-founder and MD director of the Center for Consciousness Studies, Stuart Hameroff Emeritus Professor, Psychology Department, University of Arizona Department of Anesthesiology

“People frequently ask me if Deepak Chopra truly believes the various contentious and thought-provoking beliefs he promotes in his numerous works. After getting to know him, I can say with certainty that the answer is yes.

You Are the Universe, which he co-authored with my Chapman University colleague, the renowned physicist Menas Kafatos, is the best summary of his scientific philosophy. This is the book to read if you want to comprehend the worldview that places a premium on human awareness and how science may support that viewpoint.

This book was the most illuminating step I made on my personal quest to comprehend Deepak and his perspective. —Michael Shermer, PhD, publisher of Skeptic magazine, author of The Moral Arc, The Believing Brain, and Why People Believe Weird Things, monthly contributor for Scientific American, and Presidential Fellow at Chapman University

Are you prepared to see yourself more broadly? Admit it! Science’s paradigm is shifting from emphasising matter to emphasising consciousness, or what the authors refer to as the predominance of qualia, or felt experience.

Learn more about the cosmos and yourself by reading the book. —Theoretical Quantum Physicist Amit Goswami, Ph.D., author of Quantum Economics and The Everything Answer Book

“New perspectives and even significant paradigm shifts are necessary to comprehend the cosmos. Even though there are still many unanswered questions in modern science, the development of relativity and the idea of a quantum universe drastically altered our understanding of the cosmos.

Are we once more at a turning point in our understanding of the cosmos? Menas Kafatos and Deepak Chopra offer fresh perspectives by arguing that the Cosmic Conundrum may be solved by understanding the Observer.

The book offers a delightful exploration of the self and universe together with a new wave of ideas. —Dr. Pankaj S. Joshi, Senior Professor, Theoretical Physicist and Cosmologer, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai

“When I was a youngster, I felt it was kind of odd that individuals saw their perceptions as something completely outside of themselves, but their ideas and feelings as essential to who they are.

Like our ideas and feelings, the world we see is ultimately a component of our mental lives. Deepak and Menas elevate this seemingly innocuous concept to cosmic heights in their book, exposing its actual power and importance.

They do it tastefully, intellectually, and with a scientific understanding. The outcome is beautiful. —Why Materialism Is Baloney, Brief Peeks Beyond, and More Than Allegory, written by Bernardo Kastrup, Ph.D.

“You are the Universe” may have been written Youniverse since, in addition to being “you,” you are also the beginning of the universe. As far as any modern scientist is aware, Chopra and Kafatos have produced a well-written and entirely correct examination of how the enigma of subjective consciousness serves as the foundation for material reality as it is now understood.

I really suggest this to everybody who is curiously alive. —Fred Alan Wolf, Ph.D., also known as Dr. Quantum® Theoretical Physicist, author of Time-loops and Space-twists, The Spiritual Universe, and Taking the Quantum Leap, which won a National Book award, among many other works.

“Deepak and cosmologist Menas Kafatos collaborated on their most recent masterwork. It answers every significant query we have about science and ourselves. We have the science to support our responses to questions like who we are and why we are here. This is the “new paradigm” that we have been discussing! —What is Reality: The New Map of Cosmos and Consciousness, written by Ervin Laszlo

A physicist and a physician are collaborating in a novel way in this intriguing book. They provide a fresh, and I dare say revolutionary, “paradigm” that must cause us all to reevaluate how we view the universe.

It will stir up stagnant waters in many people’s narrow-minded ideas. Additionally, it will cause us to reflect on and question our true relationship with the cosmos. —Kanaris Tsinganos,

Professor, Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy & Mechanics Department of Physics, University of Athens (Greece), Director and President of the Governing Board National Observatory of Athens

From a neuroscientific perspective, this book explores a crucial topic: the idea that the mind produces reality. The writers dislike making a distinction between internal and exterior reality. This is comparable to Buddhism in Yigacara.

The question of whether boundary conditions belong outside of physical theories or should be included in them is brought up, though, and it is a crucial one. This book brings up a number of intriguing topics that might spark fresh discussions. —

“You are the Universe” combines the physicist Menas Kafatos’s discoveries with Deepak Chopra’s signature elegant clarity to clarify the most important and deep issues at the cutting edge of modern science.

Combining Prof. Kafatos’ work in quantum physics, geophysics, and cosmology with Dr. Chopra’s knowledge of biological systems, they illuminate the areas where all of the most prosperous modern sciences fall short of explaining what can be explained using the vital lights from their own lifetimes of intense spiritual practice.

The end effect is a rich, harmonious tapestry of immense wisdom, beauty, and comfort for our civilization rather than a conflict of opposing viewpoints. Therefore, their wonderful and kind gift to everyone of us is You Are The Universe. —Neil Theise, MD, pathology professor at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine.
