Silicon Valley’s manual for creating technological habits was written by Nir Eyal, a behavioural design specialist, former Stanford lecturer, and internationally popular author. In his groundbreaking new book Hooked, which was published five years ago, Eyal exposes the weakness of distraction.

Eyal exposes the hidden psychology that causes us to become distracted in Indistractable. He explains why turning off our electronics is not the only way to solve the issue: Abstinence makes us crave more and is not practical.

About the Author

Nir Eyal spoke at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and Institute of Design. Silicon Valley learnt how to design user behaviour from his first book, Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products, which is an international bestseller.

His second book, Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life, outlines the drawbacks of distraction and offers advice on how to use technology to its full potential without letting it control us.

At NirAndFar.com, Nir writes, consults, and teaches on the nexus of psychology, technology, and business. His articles have appeared in Time, TechCrunch, Harvard Business Review, The Week, Inc., and Psychology Today.

Summary

A book on minimising the effects of distractions in your life, including practical tips on how to lessen the influence of your phone, improve your ability to concentrate at work, raise “indistractable” kids, and more.

The book covers a wide range of topics, from habit guidance to lessening the influence of gadgets on our life.

Unfortunately, I didn’t discover much fresh stuff, and I believe this is to the harm of each subject’s depth and clarity.

Like Digital Minimalism, I don’t think this was worthy of a whole book.

For the tactical guidance, quickly read this and Digital Minimalism. To create enduring habits, read Atomic Habits.
