The working of a planer machine and operations performed on it

Due to the fact that a planer machine is one of the most useful tools needed in a machine shop, its working requires a skillful worker. The machine is quite interesting, easy to learn, and different operations can perform on it. Knowing how a planer machine work is a good skill to acquire in the engineering world, so

Today we’ll be looking at the working principle of a planer machine as well as the various operation it can perform.

The working of a planer machine:

As a planer machine comprises different parts, they are effective in its working. The tool head of the machine is in a stationary position, but the worktable is designed to move. The job is securely fixed on the table and a single-point cutting tool is used. This cutting tool is held properly in the tool post which is mounted on the reciprocating ram.

When the machine’s power is on, the worktable is controlled to move forward so it can achieve its cutting stroke. This is done as the worktable moves toward the cutting tool. The return stroke is achieved by moving the worktable downward which won’t allow any cut to take place.

The mechanism used for a succession of the planer machine working is of two types; the table drive mechanism and the feeding mechanism. In the aspect of the table mechanism, it uses either an open and cross belt drive, a reversible motor drive, or a hydraulic drive.

Planer machine operations

The following stated below represent the operations that can be performed on a planer machine:

  • Working on flat horizontal surfaces.
  • Flat vertical surfaces.
  • Angular surfaces and machining dovetails.
  • Working on curved surfaces.
  • Slots and grooves.
